Lubbock Fire Rescue has grown considerably since its inception over a century ago. Beginning in 1909 as the Lubbock Volunteer Fire Department with about 15 members, it transitioned from an all-volunteer operation to a partly paid department in 1924. Today, Lubbock Fire Rescue (LFR) safeguards more than 252,000 citizens with 434 uniformed and civilian personnel staffing 19 fire stations across the city. As an ISO Class 1 fire department – the highest possible rating – LFR is in the top 1 percent of fire departments nationally.

Along with fire, medical and rescue services, Lubbock Fire Rescue also provides hazardous materials response, a dive rescue team, aircraft rescue and firefighting (ARFF), inspections and fire safety surveys, free carbon monoxide testing, and public education. For years, Atmos Energy has proudly supported LFR’s efforts with financial contributions to purchase new equipment, provide meals for LFR heroes, enhance public safety, and fund annual scholarships, along with the Coats for Kids drive to provide needed warmth during the colder months.
