Women in Construction Week

For well over a century, International Women’s Day has celebrated the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. In more recent years, IWD has coincided with Women in Construction Week, now in its twenty-fifth year strengthening and amplifying the success of women in the construction industry. The 2023 theme of WIC Week – ‘Many Paths, One Mission’ – is particularly resonant at Atmos Energy where women excel in a diversity of construction roles, all working together to Make a Difference for our communities.

Monica Davidson joined Atmos Energy 17 years ago and currently serves as construction manager in our Mid-Tex division, which includes the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex along with many surrounding cities and towns. After starting her career as an operations assistant, she also has experience working with the engineering group, reimbursable projects, budget preparation and financials, compliance, damage prevention, and back to operations. Monica’s current responsibilities as construction manager include working with local operations staff and contractors to modernize and install new distribution and pipeline infrastructure.

“Being able to grow within the company and have the opportunity to learn different parts of the business has not only helped in my growth as a leader, but has also increased my knowledge around all aspects of the industry,” Monica says. “The WIC Week theme of ‘Many Paths, One Mission’ also happens to describe my own career journey. Atmos Energy has given me a variety of incredible opportunities for growth, which has made me a better person not only at work, but also at home.”

Melissia Marshall, a construction analyst on Monica’s team with 35 years of experience at the company, supports the operations group, works with contractors on bids, prepares the scope of work for projects and conducts pre-construction meetings, among other tasks.

“Starting my career in the records department helped me understand the importance of documentation in construction, and I was fortunate to have a supervisor that encouraged me to broaden my horizons,” says Melissia. “This was very helpful when I transitioned to the role of field construction coordinator and inspector, which put me on the path to where I am today.”

Environmental Manager Kristen Jones brings a unique perspective to her role, with experience working for the EPA before joining Atmos Energy as an environmental specialist 10 years ago.

“After five years reviewing and permitting our pipeline construction projects, I transitioned to become an operations supervisor in Dallas,” Kristen recalls. “That provided an excellent opportunity to learn even more about our construction work before assuming my current role. My education at Texas Tech University and my professional experience have combined to strike the right balance between conservation, compliance, and the successful execution of our construction projects.”

For women considering work in construction, Kristen, Monica, and Melissia offer valuable guidance.

“Pursue a career in something you’re passionate about, work hard, and be confident in your abilities,” Kristen recommends. “The possibilities are endless.”

“Don’t sell yourself short, and never give up,” Monica advises. “When you work for a great company like Atmos Energy, there is always someone eager to mentor and support you throughout your career. Put your mind to it and decide to succeed as a woman in construction, and you will achieve your goals.”

“Ask questions, especially if you don’t understand something, and be a good listener,” adds Melissia. “I wouldn’t be where I am today if it weren’t for the support of my teammates. Encouragement from coworkers and managers who gave me a chance supported my success.”

International Women's Day and Women in Construction Week serve as important platforms to celebrate the achievements of women generally and in construction specifically. Consistent with our AtmoSpirit principle to Bring Out the Best in Others, we believe that the meaningful contributions of a workforce with a variety of skills, talents, backgrounds, and experiences fosters innovation and engagement and supports our vision to be the safest provider of natural gas services.
