Each year, Atmos Energy celebrates Earth Day alongside the 1,400 communities we serve. This story concludes a series we published this week about the ways in which our comprehensive environmental strategy supports a lower carbon future today and for generations to come.

Across the country and around the world on April 22, communities have come together since 1970 to embrace Earth Day as a celebration of the environment and to raise awareness about the importance of a lower carbon future. Led by U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson, the first Earth Day was a catalyst in creating the Environmental Protection Agency, the National Environmental Education Act, the Occupational Safety and Health Act, the Clean Air Act, the Clean Water Act, and the Endangered Species Act, protecting millions of men, women, and children from disease and death and hundreds of species from extinction. More than 50 years later, Earth Day is still celebrated annually with a focus on educating children, families, and leaders about emerging technologies and innovative thinking that can sustain the world’s ecosystems.

Atmos Energy’s commitment to lowering carbon emissions is year-round. In 2021, we developed a comprehensive environmental strategy focused on reducing Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions (as defined by the Greenhouse Gas Protocol) and other environmental impacts from our operations, fleet, facilities, gas supply, and customer end-use. Today, Atmos Energy continues implementing operating practices and solutions to reduce carbon from our operations through:

Ongoing system modernization work
Reducing third party damage to our system
Improving monitoring and measuring of methane emissions
Evaluating and implementing innovative technologies
Investing in research and development

As we embrace Earth Day through our continual efforts to innovate and invest in processes that reduce our environmental impact, please take a moment to revisit the stories we shared this week:

In addition to the myriad ways that our operations support a lower carbon energy future, Atmos Energy:

Is a member of Our Nation’s Energy Future Coalition (ONE Future), a voluntary alliance of leading companies across the natural gas supply chain focused on technology and policy solutions to drive continual improvement in the reduction of methane emissions;
Is a sponsor of the Low-Carbon Resources Initiative (LCRI), a joint project of the Electric Power Research Institute and the Gas Technology Institute designed to accelerate the commercial deployment of low- and zero-carbon technologies in the energy sector for economy-wide deep decarbonization; and
Is a founding partner of the EPA’s Methane Challenge and Natural Gas STAR programs, which are voluntary initiatives that encourage oil and natural gas companies to improve efficiency and reduce methane emissions.

Did you know that carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from residences using natural gas for space heating, water heating, cooking, and clothes drying are approximately 22 percent lower than those attributable to an all-electric home? Natural gas is essential for meeting the nation’s energy demands and advancing a lower carbon economy to achieve our nation’s climate goals, and Atmos Energy celebrates Earth Day in recognition of the energy independence and economic prosperity that our sustainability efforts will deliver today and for generations to come.
