What is the Carbon Offset Program?

Atmos Energy is offering eligible residential customers in Kansas and Tennessee the opportunity to participate in the purchase of carbon offset credits through our SmartChoice Carbon Offset program.

This convenient program offers three levels of participation. You can choose to purchase carbon offsets equivalent to 25, 50, or 100 percent of the estimated carbon emissions associated with the average residential customers’ natural gas usage.*

Kansas and Tennessee residential customers can find the monthly cost for your state by logging ito your Account Center or call us at 888.286.6700 during business hours.

How does this program work?

Atmos Energy has acquired carbon offsets from third-party carbon offset registries. Through our SmartChoice Carbon Offset program, residential and commercial customers can participate in the purchase of these carbon offsets equivalent to 25, 50, or 100 percent of the estimated carbon emissions associated with natural gas usage.*  The program cost will be included in your monthly bill. You may choose to end your participation any time.

What is a carbon offset?

According to The Climate Registry, carbon offsets represent the reduction, removal, or avoidance of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from a specific project that is used to compensate for (or offset) GHG emissions occurring elsewhere. Carbon offsets are given a unique serial number which allows each unit to be tracked throughout its life-cycle – from creation to retirement.

*Emission percentages are based on the average residential customer’s usage in either Kansas or Tennessee.

Under the SmartChoice Carbon Offset Program, Atmos Energy will purchase carbon offsets that have been verified by third-party carbon offset registries that are not affiliated with Atmos Energy. Atmos Energy relies on these independent carbon offset registries to verify and confirm the adequacy of the carbon offsets it purchases. Participants in the SmartChoice Carbon Offset Program should form their own views about the value of carbon offsets before enrolling in the SmartChoice Carbon Offset Program.
