A new natural gas pipeline at the Port of Amory is expected to attract new industries and bring new jobs.
Officials with the Monroe County Chamber of Commerce and Atmos Energy signaled the construction of the pipeline Friday morning.
Public Service Commissioner Brandon Presley said the port was missing a key factor to economic growth.
“One of the things this port did not have is natural gas services readily available for industries that wanted to locate here,” he said.
The utility will now be a critical asset.
"There are various utilities needed for a potential industry or manufacturing facility to locate here, and natural gas is one of those," said Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Chelsea Baulch.
The pipeline is set to be completed by March 10.
